Impossible by Nancy Werlin Review

Book: Impossible
Author: Nancy Werlin
From: Library
Summary:
Lucy has only nine months in which to break an ancient curse.

Lucy Scarborough is seventeen when she discovers that the women of her family have been cursed through the generations, forced to attempt three seemingly impossible tasks or to fall into madness upon their child's birth. How can Lucy succeed when all of her ancestors have tried and failed? But Lucy is the first girl who won't be alone as she tackles the list. She has her fiercely protective foster parents beside her. And she has Zach, whose strength amazes her more each day. Do they have enough love and resolve to overcome an age-old evil?
Review: This book was almost painful for me to get through, and I don't really just mean the storyline. I had a hard time adjusting to Nancy Werlin's writing style, and to the story in general. I thought Lucy was a likeable protagonist, but perhaps a little underdeveloped.

A lot of the action begins to happen later in the novel, and in the end, I was expecting a lot more out of it. I've heard great reviews about Impossible, and was a little disappointed with the fantasy element. I had gotten the impression that more would be happening.

I didn't hate this novel, but I wasn't in love with it. There were so many moments where I was hooked, but then quite a few more where I wanted the story to continue just a bit faster. In the end, I think the good moments of the novel outweigh all of my annoyances with it.

Highlights: I loved how strong Lucy's family was, and how much they loved one another. At first, I wasn't too sure why anyone would like Zach, but then he won me over. He definitely proves himself in the end. And despite my initial surprise at how different the story was from what I imagined it to be, it was a very good storyline. I kept turning the pages, so that counts for something.

Lowlights: I disliked how easily Lucy got over one of the worst scenes in the novel. She just kind of blew it off, and I found it to be completely annoying. It also took me awhile to really connect with the other characters of the novel, and it really shouldn't have taken hundreds of pages in. Then there were moments where nothing was even happening, and that kind of bugs me.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

It sucks when a book doesn't live up to your expectations, but thanks to your honesty, anyone who reads this review will know what to expect.

  5. I think what bugged me the most about Impossible, was just how perfect the characters seemed. If I was in Lucy's position, I'm pretty sure a little more freaking out would have been involved.

But I agree, the good outweighed the bad in this one. I enjoyed your review! Thanks for sharing. :)

  7. I enjoyed your review as well. I really liked this one but I understand your points. One book that I just finished was a book called Sea Clearwater by Selene Cardenas. What I liked most about this book is the message you get from it. This message being -Regardless of where you’re from, don’t be afraid to take a stand and make a difference.
