Grad School, Earthquakes, & A Short Blogging Break

Hey everyone!

I began grad school this week, so I'm finding myself a bit swamped as I try to adjust to my schedule  and work load (I have so much reading to do, it's crazy). My classes are so small compared to what I'm normally used to, and the reading assignments are a bit more time consuming. But, I'm excited for the semester!

In other news, this morning some areas of California were rocked by a 6.1 earthquake. I woke around 3:20ish in the morning to the world shaking wildly, books flying off my bookshelf and book tower, and it was a pretty startling way to start today. It even knocked out the power in my area for about five hours. I honestly can't remember the last time I felt an earthquake shaking my house as strongly as this one did. Luckily, the only damage was hardly worth noticing - some fallen books, a bit of broken glass, and nothing more. My thoughts are with everyone who had a more intense experience this morning, and I hope they are all okay.

Considering the busy week and this crazy morning, I think I'll take off a week from blogging. I might still hang around Twitter, but otherwise, I won't be back until next week.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe! Have a great week.

  1. I'm glad to see that you're ok! I've only felt little baby sputters of an earthquake and they still made me nervous :S

Grad school. Oh wow. Good luck with adjusting to the workload! I'm dragging my feet when it comes to applying to the program I hopefully get into. *fingers crossed*

    1. Thanks! Earthquakes are always scary. That one is worse than most I've ever felt.

Ah, the workload. It's going to take some careful scheduling, that's for sure. Thank you! I hope you get into whatever program you apply for. The application process is the hardest part, but once you're done, it feels great!

    2. I can only imagine. My mom's from Chile and she always had earthquakes scare the crap out of her :/

Prioritize and you'll be good :) just remember to sleep, lol. A lot of people sacrifice that when it's the worst thing you could do to yourself! I will hopefully be accepted into the Hispanic language & literature program I'm applying to! *fingers crossed*

    3. They're definitely terrifying. It's unnerving, to realize how powerful the earth is and how much damage it can do at any moment. I'm just grateful it wasn't worse where I live!

Ah, sleep! I'm hoping to take it as easy as I can this semester, since I wore myself out during my last year as an undergrad. Best of luck to you! Sounds like a fantastic program!

  2. Omg, that sounds so scary o.O I'm so glad you are alright. <3 Hoping there won't be more earthquakes for you. Ack. We don't have that kind of stuff here at the top of Norway. And ack. Falling books! Noooo. That would break my heart a little, hih. Anyway. Best of luck with classes. <3 and hope you have a good week without blogging :)

    1. Thank you! Definitely a scary way to start my day yesterday. I don't mind the baby earthquakes, but I would be glad to never experience one like that again. Glad you don't usually deal with that in Norway - it must be nice! :)

I know, right?! Poor books. Only a few became bent, I can deal with some bent books, so long as my family and I are safe!

      Thank you!

    1. It's exciting! So strange and nice to be able to talk & analyze literature with fellow book nerds.

Thanks! I'm just glad it wasn't the big one people are always talking about in California. It's was scary, but it could have been so much worse.

  5. I'm glad to hear you were safe in the earthquake! We were actually on a camping trip when it happened, so I (gladly) missed it. Congrats on starting grad school! Enjoy your week hiatus!

    1. Yes, everyone is fine! We're lucky enough to be a few cities away from the epicenter. I can only imagine how much worse it must of been for those right in the middle of it...

      Thank you!

  7. Good luck with grad school….you'll love it. Some of my favorite lit classes were grad classes…it's a lot of work though, especially the reading. And I am so glad you are ok after the earthquake. I'm sure that was quite a shock, especially to wake up to that! Enjoy your blogging break!

    1. Ooh, glad to hear that! I think it's going to be great. It will be nice to be in classes with people who want to be there to learn.

Definitely a shock! I wasted a few seconds after waking up simply staring at everything in my room shake and fall down before my mind finally snapped out of it and ran to a doorway. No matter how many earthquakes I experience, I'll never get used to the strangeness of all that motion.

  8. Good luck with school and glad you're okay! I can't believe the earthquake. That is so scary! (I like in LA so I totally get it) A week off is hopefully just what you need! Happy Reading and hope you like your blogging break and get lots of other stuff done!
