Top Ten Favorite YA Characters

TTT is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten All Time Favorite Characters In Books

1.  Fred and George Weasley (Harry Potter) - They are so awesome, it's almost not fair that they don't exist. I would definitely be best friends with these two.

2.  Karou + Brimstone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone) - Both amazing and complex characters!

3.  Wes Baker (The Truth About Forever) - *swoons* (enough said)

4.  Susannah "Suze" Simon (Mediator) - Tough, sarcastic, relatable, and she can see (and beat up) ghosts.

5.  Sirius Black (Harry Potter) - Without a doubt, my favorite character in the HP world.

6.  Iko (Cinder) - Can I just say that I love and adore this little android?

7.  Orion (Across the Universe) - Kind of a Spoiler: A villain, yes, but I still think he's very interesting as a character. I'm hoping he's in Shades of Earth more!

8.  Mara (The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer) - She is seriously the most intriguing narrator I've come across lately. Sarcastic, possibly crazy, and continuously surprising.

9.  Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter) - This post is getting to be very Harry Potterish, but how can I not include this kooky gal? She's pure awesome with her odd accessories and even odder statements.

10.  Rose & Dimitri (Vampire Academy series) - Yeah, yeah, I'm cheating again by choosing a pair. But, Rose + Dimitri = epic.

Who's in your top ten?

Godspeed was fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos.

It's been three months since Amy was unplugged. The life she always knew is over. And everywhere she looks, she sees the walls of the spaceship Godspeed. But there may just be hope: Elder has assumed leadership of the ship. He's finally free to enact his vision - no more Phydus, no more lies.

But when Elder discovers shocking news about the ship, he and Amy race to discover the truth behind life on Godspeed. They must work together to unlock a puzzle that was set in motion hundreds of years earlier, unable to fight the romance that's growing between them and the chaos that threatens to tear them apart....read more at Goodreads
"Follow the leader."1

Some secrets are not meant to be shared. Three months after the end of Across the Universe, Elder has become the leader of Godspeed, and each of his subsequent choices as its newest ruler have come with consequences. While Elder struggles with being the leader, Amy battles with her outsider status on Godspeed. But when she receives a mysterious clue hinting at a secret revolving around Godspeed, she readily embarks on a scavenger hunt to find answers that will change everything.

Thank you, Beth Revis, for a sequel that is just as great if not better than the first novel. A Million Suns ramps up the energy and pandemonium. Revis takes everything - mystery, relationships, fear - to another level. Life on Godspeed is as claustrophobic as ever, with so many people and nowhere to run. A Million Suns is a magnetic mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat, excited and breathless, until you arrive at the final page.

Highlights: So many surprises. Even if you guess one, there are plenty of others that will amaze you. The hunt for the clues was interesting. Amy and Elder's relationship was intriguing - things are pretty strained between them, and I liked that they still have some issues to work out.

Lowlights: It took a few chapters to get back into the characters voices and to remember their personalities. And Revis killed off a character I liked (again).

Rating:

1 pg. 147 - A simple phrase, and yet it gives me chills.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

YA Book Queen's Summary:
When Amy decides to join her parents to embark on a 300 year journey to a new planet, she has no idea just what she's gotten herself into.

After forcibly waking up from her frozen state fifty years too early, Amy finds herself in a society unlike the one she's grown up knowing on Earth. Here on Godspeed, Eldest is in charge, and his protégé, Elder, is learning what it takes to lead the ship. Here on Godspeed, Amy is different...and different is not always a good thing.

There's a killer on the loose, murdering slumbering people who are vital for when the ship lands on the new planet. Fearing for her parent's safety, Amy teams up with Elder and his friend Harley to figure who is behind these murderous deeds, delve into the secrets the Godspeed is hiding, and try to find out just who is going to be the next target. But some secrets may be too much for any of them to handle....
This book is so incredible that I would walk across the universe just to get a copy. But thankfully, that's what bookstores are for (whew!).

In Across the Universe, the narrative switches from Amy to Elder, alternating every chapter and giving a full view of two different types of lives. Amy's the girl from Earth. She's a free spirit, loves to run, misses her boyfriend, and desperately misses her parents - who are still in a frozen state. Elder is young as well, trying to learn how to be the next leader (or Eldest) of the ship, and struggling since the current Eldest refuses to tell him everything he needs to know. Both characters are fresh, fully developed, and easy to differentiate from one another when reading the separate POV's. I didn't have a character I preferred, although Amy's perspective is the one reader's will easily relate with since she's experiencing the unusualness of Godspeed for the first time.

Godspeed is without a doubt easily visualized (thanks to the writing and also a very neat map). But more importantly, this book keeps you thinking about the issues taking place. There is some romance, but mysteries lie at the core of this novel. There will be questions, guesses, and finally, there will be answers. The first novel of what will likely be a captivating trilogy, Across the Universe is already on my best of 2011 list.

Highlights: Relationships are built and delved into slowly, realistically. The entire story is very well fleshed-out. The technology and social differences were fascinating and intriguing. Honestly, I think I could praise this book all day. Across the Universe is incredible and an exciting mystery to watch unfold.

Lowlights: This book was everything I wanted, hoped for, and expected it to be. No complaints.

Rating: 5 out of 5
