<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It's my pleasure to be a part of the <a href="http://fiercereadsya.tumblr.com/post/136882501433/the-winning-kiss" target="_blank">Winner's Kiss Blog Tour</a>, where all of the tour stops are sharing their favorite literary kiss! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Although I was tempted to use one of the kisses in Rutkoski's work (because my goodness, they are wonderful and so well written), my love for another kiss won in the end. See my choice below! </span><br />

<b>What book is your favorite literary kiss in?</b><br />
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen<br />
<br />
<b>Who is kissing?</b><br />
The main character, Macy, kisses the always swoonworthy Wes.<br />
<div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 23px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: 17px; line-height: 23px; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>Why is it your favorite?</b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I grew up reading only a handful of authors, and Dessen was one of them. Besides Meg Cabot's Michael Moscovitz, Wes was my first fictional crush. But even setting the wonderfulness of Wes aside, this kiss always stands out to me because the girl kisses the guy. And I love that it rejects the idea of the guy initiating a kiss, and just lets the moment be a moment. Dessen describes it wonderfully! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b>What kiss do you hope to see in Marie Rutkoski's The Winner's Kiss?</b><br />
Arin and Krestrel, of course! Although, I'd like to see Roshar kiss someone too. </div>

War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it with untrustworthy new allies and the empire as his enemy. Though he has convinced himself that he no longer loves Kestrel, Arin hasn’t forgotten her, or how she became exactly the kind of person he has always despised. She cared more for the empire than she did for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she did for him.<br />
<br />
At least, that’s what he thinks.<br />
<br />
In the frozen north, Kestrel is a prisoner in a brutal work camp. As she searches desperately for a way to escape, she wishes Arin could know what she sacrificed for him. She wishes she could make the empire pay for what they’ve done to her.<br />
<br />
But no one gets what they want just by wishing.<br />
<br />
As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover that the world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and they are caught in between. With so much to lose, can anybody really win?</blockquote>

I know I've been absent from the blogosphere for quite some time (grad school + teaching for the first time are both keeping me busy), but I'm hoping to start easing my way back into blogging this month. And what better way to jump back into blogging than with a post on some (mostly) recent covers?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
What if the person you were falling for was a total mystery?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While Lily is spacing out in Chemistry one day, she picks up her pencil and scribbles a line from one of her favorite songs on the desk. The next day, someone else has written back to her on the desk! Soon enough Lily and the mystery student are exchanging notes, and lyrics, and even sharing secrets. When Lily finds out that her anonymous pen pal is a guy, she's flustered -- and kind of feels like she's falling for him. She and her best friend set out to unravel the identity of the letter writer -- but when the truth is revealed, the guy is the LAST person Lily could have ever imagined it to be. Now that Lily knows the truth, can she untangle her feelings and gather the courage to listen to her heart?</div>

From beloved author Kasie West (The Distance Between Us) comes an utterly charming story about mixed messages, missed connections, and the magic of good old-fashioned secret admirer notes.</div>

West's books always tend to be charming / adorable, so I'm sure this will be a delight to read!</div>

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off. </blockquote>
<div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist.<br />
<br />
Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear. </blockquote>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights:</b> Beautifully written and powerful, <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23341894-every-last-word" target="_blank">Every Last Word</a> </i>is an exceptional story. Mental illness can be difficult to write, but Tamara Ireland Stone does so in a respectful, realistic way. Sam is such a realistic character, and an easy narrator to like. The rest of the characters are vibrant, and I love the idea of a hidden high school poetry society. I tend to be excellent at guessing twists, but this novel took me by surprise in the end. I especially appreciate the fact that <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23341894-every-last-word" target="_blank">Every Last Word</a> </i>encourages seeking professional help - that's a message that isn't always included in novels dealing with mental illness, so I'm glad to see it here since it is so important. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: I can't think of anything that really stuck out in a bad way. I enjoyed this book from start to finish. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Final Thoughts</b>: <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23341894-every-last-word" target="_blank">Every Last Word</a> </i>is a special story that will make you laugh, cry, and wish you had your own secret poetry society (I WANT ONE SO BADLY). I'd recommend giving it a chance and checking it out!</div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.8000001907349px; line-height: 15.4559993743896px;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tim Mason is a boy with many problems - he's trying to stay sober, he's being kicked out of his house, he's totally crushing on his best friend's sister, and his past is about to come back and with quite the surprise. Alice Garrett, meanwhile, is the girl who pulls the strings. When it comes to relationships, she's in charge, and she always knows when to cut loose. But once these two collide and their worlds intertwine, nothing about their lives will ever be the same.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a difficult book to talk about, if only because the biggest part of the story isn't revealed for a few chapters (and I won't say anything, since the summary avoids mentioning it). BUT, that aspect of the story makes this an interesting story. Tim and Alice have amazing chemistry for such a strangely matched couple. Their voices are distinct, with both POV's coming off genuinely different. I think I prefer Tim's voice, if only because he's a slightly more unusual main character. Things do get a little soap-opera dramatic in regard to Tim's storyline, but that was likely unavoidable. Romantic, dramatic, and amusing, <i>T<a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24611582-the-boy-most-likely-to" target="_blank">he Boy Most Likely To</a></i> is a great story with excellent voices and a fabulous cast of characters. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights</b>: Tim. He's a complex guy, full of imperfections and plenty of charisma. While Alice was a great main character as well, Tim is the standout for me. The Garrett family make plenty of appearances, and they are as lovely and amusing as ever. But what I loved the most was that book tackles tough subjects and moments in life. Nothing is easy for any of these characters, and I appreciate that authenticity. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: I felt like the storyline became a bit over the top / dramatic for my tastes. It also felt slightly too long. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Final Thoughts</b>: <span style="text-align: justify;">If you're looking for a summertime read with romance and the harsher side of reality, this story is sure to entertain you while tugging at your heartstrings.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some interesting changes! I really love the new cover for <i>Anya's War </i>(has anyone read this? Is it good?) and the paperback of <i>Six Feet Over It </i>captures my interest more than the HC. But I'm really sad to see <i>Speechless </i>change, the original cover is so striking, daring, and completely perfect for the story. </div>

<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
A sixteen-year-old governess becomes a spy in this alternative U.S. history where the British control with magic and the colonists rebel by inventing.<br />
<br />
It’s 1888, and sixteen-year-old Verity Newton lands a job in New York as a governess to a wealthy leading family—but she quickly learns that the family has big secrets. Magisters have always ruled the colonies, but now an underground society of mechanics and engineers are developing non-magical sources of power via steam engines that they hope will help them gain freedom from British rule. The family Verity works for is magister—but it seems like the children's young guardian uncle is sympathetic to the rebel cause. As Verity falls for a charming rebel inventor and agrees to become a spy, she also becomes more and more enmeshed in the magister family’s life. She soon realizes she’s uniquely positioned to advance the cause—but to do so, she’ll have to reveal her own dangerous secret.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights</b>: Rebel Mechanics plays with history and gives it a delightfully alternate twist, where magic powers nineteenth century life and the wealthy families who wield it will do anything to keep the normal citizens from using more creative, mechanical methods to gain some power of their own. An incredibly fun and magical steampunk story, Rebel Mechanics is sure to entertain readers with its many curious inventions, secrets, and deceptions (not to mention Lord Henry, he is quite charming and I wish there had been so much more of him in the story). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: I wanted to love this book - steampunk! Rebels! Magic! But despite all the pros, I felt like something wasn't quite there. As a narrator, Verity can be pretty naive, which can get a bit frustrating at times. Characters, overall, while interesting, were not developed enough to really have a spark - there wasn't enough about them to capture my interest or attention. I think it's merely a matter of writing style, and this book being enjoyable enough but not entirely to my preferences. Additionally, the story was incredibly predictable, so all of the "surprises" were not very surprising.<br />
<br />
<b>Final Thoughts:</b> My lowlights make it sound like I didn't enjoy the story - quite the opposite, I was entertained throughout the entire novel. But, as much fun as the story proved to be, it didn't make a memorable impression. However, many readers are falling head-over-heels for this story, so I'd recommend checking it out if you're a YA steampunk / historical fan! </div>

Some years it’s bad, like the season when her father died, and some years it’s just a lot of cuts and scrapes. <br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Scrapes, cuts, bruises, bumps, broken bones, and even death - with October comes the accident season, and this year, it's a bad one. Cara, the narrator, has a penchant for seeing more than others do, her best friend Bea is skilled in (and mocked for) reading tarot cards, Sam is in love with a girl he can't have, and Alice is hiding secrets from everyone around her. But in October, their world turns upside down as they fall prey to accident after accident, and as they try to find a missing girl who might have something to do with it all. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Decidedly different, and with a touch of magical realism cutting through the pages, <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24611995-the-accident-season" target="_blank">The Accident Season</a> </i>is an eerie tale of friendship, family, love, and, of course, secrets. Moira Fowley-Doyle writes this story in a darkly enchanting voice that draws you in and leaves you wishing for more. The point-of-view mostly sticks with Cara, but every now and then, it shifts and gives readers a glimpse into the past of this curious family. And while some parts of the story are easy to see coming, this novel is undeniably intriguing and captivating. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights</b>: The settings, especially the old house Cara and her friends find, are so atmospheric and haunting. Fowley-Doyle's vivid writing style made everything easy to envision. The characters are quirky and unique, and their normal everyday lives have just enough magical realism to make every page intriguing. <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24611995-the-accident-season" target="_blank">The Accident Season</a></i> is like a daydream - vivid, magical, short enough to leave you wanting more. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: Some aspects are predictable, and I feel like there could have been a bit more development with the characters. While I was fascinated by this story and the writing style, I didn't care for the characters as much as I wanted to.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Final thoughts</b>: While the characters and story didn't end up being as developed as I hoped, the daydream & nightmarish quality it brings was enough to keep me curious and entertained. This is a quick, fascinating story to curl up with for a few hours. </div>

<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<b>From Rob Thomas, the creator of groundbreaking television series and movie Veronica Mars, comes the first book in a thrilling new mystery series.</b><br />
<br />
Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She's traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.<br />
<br />
Now it's spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is not a simple missing person's case. The house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica's past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.</blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Story:</b> <i>The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line</i> is a gripping mystery with a few shocking surprises thrown in to keep readers guessing. Veronica Mars is back, with as much snark and wit as ever, and the story picks up soon after the events of the Veronica Mars movie. In <i>The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line, </i>Veronica's simple case of finding a missing spring breaker soon becomes a tangled web of lies and secrets, making this story wonderfully unpredictable and exciting. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Performance:</b> Kristen Bell is an outstanding actress, so it shouldn't have surprised me to find she makes for a highly impressive narrator. She captures Veronica's personality with ease (obviously), while somehow managing to also evoke Mac, Keith, Wallace, and others seemingly effortlessly. Bell brings everyone to life with their own distinct tone and voice. I had to remind myself a few times that it was still only Bell speaking, and not a cast of narrators. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights:</b> I had previously read and enjoyed the kindle version of <i>The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line</i>, but Bell's narration is infinitely superior to the print / ebook versions. She brings every character to life, and the story seems better suited to being heard versus read. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights: </b>The writing style became slightly repetitive, uneven, and a little too information heavy at certain points. I noticed this less, however, while listening to Bell's narration.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I was going to teach a class, any class of my choice, it would be on <b>YA lit</b>. But, I'd choose a controversial topic within the YA umbrella, like <b>Sex(uality) and Society</b> (the title is a bit off, because while it's about sex, sexuality, and society, it's also about sexual assault). I've taken enough classes to know that topics like that tend to get the best, and most thoughtful, discussions. Some of my best papers were written in classes dealing with sexuality in literature. And I feel like YA literature gets a bad reputation when it comes to sexuality, so it would be nice to place this novels in an academic setting and really <i>think </i>about them. </div>

<span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1440110151483_2190">The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.</span></div>

But pursuit by battleship is the least of their worries. Their fleet’s artificial intelligence—which should be protecting them—may actually be an enemy. And a plague is slowly ravaging the fleet with terrifying consequences. As Kady plunges into a web of data hacking in search of the truth, she realizes that there’s only one boy who can help her bring everything to light . . . and of course, it’s her ex-boyfriend, Ezra.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hi everyone!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm going to take a couple weeks off from blogging while I try to figure out my schedule for college this semester. It's going to be busy - taking classes, working on my thesis, and I'll even be teaching a first-year college composition class for the first time in my life (speaking of this, if you're an English teacher who teaches in a high school / college, I would greatly appreciate any online resources you may have - please send me an email or link below if you do have any, or even any advice)!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once I get my schedule figured out and settle into a routine, I'll be back with more reviews, interviews, and fun bookish giveaways! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hope you are all doing well and having a wonderful summer,</div>

Caden Bosch is on a ship that's headed for the deepest point on Earth: Challenger Deep, the southern part of the Marianas Trench.<br />

Caden Bosch pretends to join the school track team but spends his days walking for miles, absorbed by the thoughts in his head.<br />

Caden Bosch is split between his allegiance to the captain and the allure of mutiny.<br />

Caden Bosch is torn.<br />
<br />
A captivating and powerful novel that lingers long beyond the last page, Challenger Deep is a heartfelt tour de force by one of today's most admired writers for teens.</blockquote>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An unflinchingly honest, <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18075234-challenger-deep" target="_blank">Challenger Deep</a> </i>delves into the shadowy and murky depths of mental illness, and does so in a creative yet respectful way. Chapters switch between what readers might call <i>reality </i>(Caden's everyday life | life in a hospital) and <i>fantasy </i>(Caden's fantastical journey to Marianas Trench, traveling on an ominous ship with quite the group of characters), but both are very real to Caden. The short chapters offer abrupt, brief glimpses into the mind of a young man who is struggling to navigate the world and his thoughts. This is a story unlike any other, and <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18075234-challenger-deep" target="_blank">Challenger Deep</a> </i>is truly an incredible novel.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Highlights:</b> Caden's personality shines, his struggle is prominent, and I felt for him so much. The side characters are equally well written. While the ending is one of optimism, I appreciate that Shusterman also acknowledges the fact that mental illness is a <i>battle </i>- sometimes you end up right where you began, starting from scratch. But other times, you do get better (and I especially loved the support system that Caden has in this story - friends, family, doctors). The drawings, by Shusterman's son, add an even more authentic touch to an already impressive story, </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: It takes a little time to adjust to the style of this story, since the chapters are so short and the switches happen regularly. The writing style is probably going to frustrate some readers, but if you can get into it, this story is incredible.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Final thoughts: </b><i style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18075234-challenger-deep" target="_blank">Challenger Deep</a> </i><span style="text-align: justify;">is an important story that expertly uses creativity to explore mental illness. I highly recommend this novel, it truly is excellent. </span></div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Wilhelmina has a hundred enemies.<br />
<br />
HER FRIENDS HAVE TURNED. After her identity is revealed during the Inundation, Princess Wilhelmina is kept prisoner by the Indigo Kingdom, with the Ospreys lost somewhere in the devastated city. When the Ospreys’ leader emerges at the worst possible moment, leaving Wil’s biggest ally on his deathbed, she must become Black Knife to set things right.<br />
<br />
<br />
HER MAGIC IS UNCONTROLLABLE. Wil’s power is to animate, not to give true life, but in the wraithland she commanded a cloud of wraith mist to save herself, and later ordered it solid. Now there is a living boy made of wraith—destructive and deadly, and willing to do anything for her.<br />
<br />
HER HEART IS TORN. Though she’s ready for her crown, declaring herself queen means war. Caught between what she wants and what is right, Wilhelmina realizes the throne might not even matter. Everyone thought the wraith was years off, but already it’s destroying Indigo Kingdom villages. If she can’t protect both kingdoms, soon there won’t be a land to rule.<br />
<br />
In this stunning conclusion to THE ORPHAN QUEEN, Jodi Meadows follows Wilhelmina’s breathtaking and brave journey from orphaned criminal on the streets to magic-wielding queen.</blockquote>
<br />
I thought THE ORPHAN QUEEN was a fun book, so I'm very curious to see how it all ends (and also, I cannot believe this is a duology! I thought for sure it was a trilogy, but at least that means everything will be wrapped up in this book).<br />
<br />
What are you waiting on?<br />

Love the covers for <i>Salt to the Sea</i>, <i>Down with the Shine</i>, and the cool font for <i>Tell the Wind and Fire</i>! I'm kind of sad that TSoM&Y is changing covers (the original is gorgeous), but the new one is cute.<br />

<b style="background-color: white; font-size: 15.3999996185303px; line-height: 21.5599994659424px; text-align: justify;"></b>A hot debut trilogy and a riveting story of survival, courage, and romance in a future where creating a master civilization is the only thing prized, no matter the method. After the Omega (the end of the end), 16 year old guys known as LTs discover their overseers are raising them not to be soldiers (lieutenants) as promised, but to be sold as bait because of their Less Than status and hunted for sport. They escape and join forces with a girls’ camp, the Sisters, who have been imprisoned and experimented on for the "good of the Republic," by a government eager to use twins in their dark research. In their plight for freedom, these heroes must find the best in themselves to fight against the worst in their enemies.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights:</b> <i>The Prey </i>undeniably begins in an intriguing and utterly brutal world. And once the story gets going, Isbell keeps increasing the intensity as the stakes get higher and the characters are forced to fight for their survival. The action scenes are especially thrilling.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights:</b> Despite all of the action and mystery, I wasn't really interested in the story or the characters. The characters especially seemed very bland and stereotypical, which made it hard for me to care about them, let alone want to know what happens next for them. While the world is intriguing, it's also very small - Isbell keeps vague about details that could expand this world, and centers the story in a handful locations. All in all, the writing style and this story wasn't for me.</div>

From Sara Shepard, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Pretty Little Liars series, comes the shocking sequel to The Perfectionists--with an ending you'll have to read to believe!<br />
<br />
Mackenzie, Ava, Caitlin, Julie, and Parker have done some not-so-perfect things. Even though they all talked about killing rich bully Nolan Hotchkiss, they didn't actually go through with it. It's just a coincidence that Nolan died in exactly the way they planned . . . right? Except Nolan wasn't the only one they fantasized about killing. When someone else they named dies, the girls wonder if they're being framed. Or are they about to become the killer's next targets?</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights: </b>The girls from <i>The Perfectionists</i> are back, and if you think you know what's going to happen in this book, guess again. The killer steps up their game in this story, leaving no one safe as the body count rises and the mystery builds. And Shepard makes it quite a fun mystery to unravel. Even after I correctly guessed the Big Bad, Shepard still manage to throw in another plot twist that completely blew my mind and left me with the desire to reread the first novel in order to see how I could have possibly missed it. <i>The Good Girls </i>is a thrilling sequel that pull you in with exciting chapters and twists.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: The characters still don't feel like real people. They're easy to differentiate from one another, but the constant jumping back and forth in POV makes it hard to <i>really </i>connect with them or even see them as fully-developed characters. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights</b>: Grant excels at writing eerie scenes, and I was glued to this fast-paced story from the first page to the last. The Messenger himself is a fascinating side character, undoubtedly full of secrets. His job is both just and somewhat villainous, as he gives those who have done something wrong the chance to play a game in order to atone for their mistakes. Mara's time with the Messenger is predictable, but fascinating as she struggles to find out what she's doing there and why he needs her. Grant packs in a myriad of themes and ideas into such a small number of pages, but it never felt overwhelming. Instead, this creepy story packs a punch with strong morals and ideas. Excellent worldbuilding and an intriguing start to a new series, <i>Messenger of Fear</i> is a disturbing and haunting tale that will leave you eagerly waiting for more. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights</b>: Fascinating story, but far too short. The twist was very predictable, and the story far too formulaic (I wonder if it was intentionally written that way, because I know Grant is skilled at writing a surprising and unique story).</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today, my blog turns 6 years old! YAY!!!!!!!!!!</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm kind of in shock that this blog is that old. Sometimes I feel like I've been blogging forever, and other days, it feels like I only just started. Before I get to the fun (giveaways!), I wanted to take a moment to share a very quick list of things I've learned from blogging:<br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<h1>
<b>6 Things I've Learned From Blogging</b></h1>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b>
<b>6. The blogosphere is full of amazingly kind, incredible people. </b>One of my goals this summer to reach out more to each of you (readers, bloggers, authors), because all of the the small interactions I've had so far have been so positive and fun. There may be some drama now and then, but the blogosphere is full of so many people with good (bookish) hearts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>5. Book blogging is a surprisingly great learning tool</b>, especially for anyone looking to be knowledgeable in social media. I'm going to be teaching in the fall, and I'm looking into ways to possibly incorporate blogging / social media into the curriculum, since it's such a huge part of students lives today. Additionally, blogging has taught me to learn things like HTML - While I would never hire me to build a website, I have basic skills in HTML now, and can usually figure out how to adjust / change certain features. It's fun to be able to know how to do those kind of things. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4. There are so many under-the-radar books I never would have known about</b> if I hadn't of been a part of the blogosphere. I used to only read a handful of authors back when I was a non-blogger, and so I'm grateful to the blogging community for pointing out so many incredible stories and authors that I would have missed. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. There's no right or wrong way to blog.</b> And that's what I've come to love - how each blogger has their own style and way of doing things. It's fun to be able to participate in memes, but also post on books or bookish topics that I want to discuss. But what's even better is that blogging allows for growth, and change. You're never stuck - you can always shake things up with something new, whether it's a new type of post or style of writing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. Blogger / Reader interactions are always a highlight.</b> Whether it's one comment on a blog post or twenty, one bookish tweet or a dozen, I'm always excited to see what other bookworms have to say, and to have the chance to fangirl over books with other people. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Despite the fact that blogging can become stressful, crazy, <i>chaotic</i>, at the end of the day, it's an incredibly fun, worthwhile hobby that I am so glad to have</b>. I've been around for 6 years, and taken weeks or months off here and there, but I always come back each time I step away. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to say THANK YOU so much to my readers, new and old, regular readers who comment and silent lurkers who stop by only occasionally. You <i>all </i>rock, and you make book blogging such an amazing experience. I look forward to another year of blogging and growing as a blogger!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To celebrate, I'm giving away some books! </div>

Emery Lord has been killing it when it comes to YA contemp, so this one is high on my wishlist. She writes her characters so authentically, and the emotions just jump off the page. Very excited for this book!</div>

Paradise quickly gets gruesome in this thrilling page-turner with a plot that’s ripped from the headlines and a twist that defies the imagination.<br />
<br />
It’s Spring Break of senior year. Anna, her boyfriend Tate, her best friend Elise, and a few other close friends are off to a debaucherous trip to Aruba that promises to be the time of their lives.<br />
<br />
But when Elise is found brutally murdered, Anna finds herself trapped in a country not her own, fighting against vile and contemptuous accusations. As Anna sets out to find her friend’s killer, she discovers harsh revelations about her friendships, the slippery nature of truth, and the ache of young love.<br />
<br />
Awaiting the judge’s decree, it becomes clear to Anna that everyone around her thinks she is not only guilty, but also dangerous. And when the whole story comes out, reality is more shocking than anyone ever imagined...</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You know how people slow down when driving past an accident, because they are so incapable of <i>not </i>taking a quick glance at the wreckage before them? Reading <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16074758-dangerous-girls" target="_blank">Dangerous Girls</a></i> left me with that vibe, where everything is slowly unraveling into chaos, you don't know why you can't look away, you just know you <i>have </i>to see it unfold. Every moment flipping through <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16074758-dangerous-girls" target="_blank">Dangerous Girls</a></i> is a thoroughly intriguing one, and the reveal in the end is undeniably a shocker.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyone who has ever been in a poisonous friendship will read <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16074758-dangerous-girls" target="_blank">Dangerous Girls</a> </i>and wait uncomfortably as the story unfolds. On the surface, Anna and Elise are great for each other. They have fun, understand one another, and together, they are simply unstoppable and wild. But underneath, their friendship is a bit less friendly than it should be. And, after Elise is found dead, Anna becomes the number one suspect. Her other friends, and even strangers, are quick to turn on her as Anna attempts to figure out who killed her best friend, and why. As the mystery of <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16074758-dangerous-girls" target="_blank">Dangerous Girls</a> </i>unfolds through alternating chapters, Haas makes every moment a thrilling ride.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights: </b>Anna is a very accessible protagonist, and it's easy enough to feel sorry for her as she faces such a difficult situation. While I'm usually not a fan of past / present POV chapter switches, it worked in this novel because it allowed a complete view of who Anna and Elise are/were and how this mess came to be. The writing flows nicely, keeping me hooked for hours and hours. Someone spoiled the big twist for me online, but even despite that, Haas <i>still </i>kept me curious, intrigued, and addicted from start to finish. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lowlights:</b> It ended? </div>

<b>Rating:</b> <b><a href="http://yabookqueen.blogspot.com/2013/07/ya-book-queens-rating-scale.html" target="_blank">The Royal Library, Top Shelf</a>: Loved, 4+ out of 5</b>. Despite the fact that I knew the twist ending before going into this novel, I still found <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16074758-dangerous-girls" target="_blank">Dangerous Girls</a></i> to be captivating from start to finish. I almost let this story pass me by, and I'm incredibly glad that I decided to check it out. This novel was exactly the thriller / mystery I needed to read, and I loved every second of it. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Remy Starr is used to watching relationships fail - her mother, novelist Barbara Starr, is on marriage number five, while Remy is an expert in knowing when to break things off in her own love life. But when a clumsy musician named Dexter bursts into her well-ordered life, Remy finds that her usual rules in romance don't apply, and she might need to give up the rules she clings to if she wants a real shot at love. If you're looking for a sweet summer romance, a slightly complicated family, and a novel with awesome BFF's, <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15394334-this-lullaby" target="_blank">This Lullaby</a></i> is the story for you. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Highlights:</b> <span style="text-align: justify;">Easily one of Dessen's better novels<a href="#ThisLullaby1" id="refThisLullaby1">1</a>, <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15394334-this-lullaby" target="_blank">This Lullaby</a></i> is a delightful mixture of sweet and serious. Remy is one of Dessen's more mature and slightly pessimistic protagonists, with her cynical view on love and messy history. She's blunt, in your face, and isn't afraid to say whatever is on her mind, whether or not you want to hear it<a href="#ThisLullaby2" id="refThisLullaby2">2</a>. The love interest, Dexter, is an endearing sort of awkward, quirky, and sweet. Dessen takes care to flesh out each side character out with their own distinct personalities, and manages to create quite a few wonderful characters. While the romance is fun to read, the friendships and familial bonds are equally intriguing and well written. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<b>Lowlights</b>: Hate Spinnerbait<a href="#ThisLullaby3" id="refThisLullaby3">3</a>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Allusions</b>: Scarlett Thomas from <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15390575-someone-like-you" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank"><i>Someone Like You</i></a> makes an appearance. And any Dessen fan will recognize many of the locations as well, since they are featured in Dessen's other books.<br /></div>

<br /><blockquote>
Few things come as naturally to Harper as epic mistakes. In the past year, she was kicked off the swim team, earned a reputation as Carson High’s easiest hookup, and officially became the black sheep of her family. But the worst mistake was her first one: destroying her relationship with her best friend, Declan.<br /><br />
Now, after two semesters of silence between Harper and Declan, Declan is home from boarding school for summer break. Everything about him is different—he’s taller, stronger . . . handsomer. But Harper has changed too, especially in the wake of her mom’s cancer diagnosis.<br />
<br />While Declan wants nothing to do with Harper, he’s still Declan, her Declan, the only person she wants to talk to about what’s really going on with her. But after she betrayed his trust, he’s also the one person she’s lost all right to seek comfort from.<br />As shared friends and shared histories draw them together, Harper and Declan must decide which parts of their past are still possible to fix and which parts they’ll have to live with forever.</blockquote>
