Mini-Reviews: BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY and PARTIALS

BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY by Jaclyn Dolamore
Point-of-View: 3rd person
Source: Netgalley
Format: ARC

Refreshingly unique, BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY tells a tale of a girl willing go to any lengths to save her sister. Unable to give up on her sister, Esmerine trades her fins for legs and ventures painfully onto land. Esmerine is incredibly endearing in this respect, because she has to withstand intense pain in order to search on land for her missing sister. While the story becomes more predictable as Esmerine draws closer to realizing the truth, the story remains enjoyable and captivating as Esmerine searches for her sister and for her own future. I was so fascinated by the world Dolamore created and how she used her mythology, from the mermaids to the winged people. Overall, an enjoyable story, despite some flaws.

PARTIALS by Dan Wells
Point-of-View: 3rd person
Source: Purchased
Format: Kindle

PARTIALS is a gripping start to what will likely be a fascinating series. Sci-fi fans might feel like they've seen beings like Partials (human-like robotic beings) before, but it doesn't keep this survival story from being thoroughly engrossing. The world building is top notch, as are the characters. There are some issues, like the overly wordy descriptions that feel like a bit too much, and also how everyone thinks Kira is an idiot when it comes to her idea for finding a cure for RM (it's a logical idea, so it seems like the author had everyone disagree for the sake of the plot). But in the end, PARTIALS is one fascinating sci-fi story that left me curious for so much more.

COVERS: Mila, Scarlet, Scoundrels, and more

This is fascinating. Normally, this isn't the kind of cover I'd like, but I think it's interesting. It makes me curious about the story inside...

Uncontrollable (The Nature of Grace #2)
I like the first cover more, but I'm glad it matches the first book. The eyes are (yet again) so stunning!

Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2)
It's not as striking as Cinder's cover, but I like that they stuck with the same overall theme. I love the font and flowing cloak!

Shades of Earth (Across the Universe #3)

I kind of hate it. After the gorgeousness of ATU hardcover, ATU paperback, and AMS hardcover, they redesigned the entire trilogy (you can see all three new covers at Wired) and made it look like a middle grade series -- which, I guess, is supposed to draw in more male readers. I wish they had waited until after they put out a matching HC for Shades of Earth and then redesigned the trilogy in paperback. I'm extremely disappointed in this cover and the late change in covers, so the story better be epic to make up for it.

Perfect Scoundrels (Heist Society #3)

YAY for a new Heist Society novel! So happy to see that this cover matches up nicely with the first two.

Fragments (Partials #2)
Why does the girl have black hair on Partials and light brown hair on Fragments? I like the background for Fragments a lot, but I feel like Partials has a much better and stronger cover.

Have you spotted any great covers lately?

Top Ten Books On My Spring To-Be-Read list

TTT is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

1.  Insurgent by Veronica Roth - I'm pretty much counting the days until this one releases, and when it does, it's first on my TBR list.

2.  Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore - Same as above.

3.  The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman - Confession: I have never read a Neil Gaiman book. I feel like it's time that I fix that.

4.   Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson - I've left this one sitting on my shelf for a long time. This spring, it will be read.

5.  The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancy - This one seems like an interesting book. Plus, it has a Printz honor, so it must be great.

6.  Blackbringer (Dreamdark #1) by Laini Taylor - I loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone and enjoyed Lips Touch Three Times, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one too!

7.  Partials by Dan Wells - This is definitely on my TBR list, on my Kindle, and waiting patiently for me to have the time to read.

8.  The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder - Amazing reviews for this one! Hopefully the story lives up to them.

9.  Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins - Anyone remember that cliffhanger from Demonglass? Yeah. That was intense. I'm so curious how this one will turn out.

10.  Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally - Can't go wrong with a contemporary novel :)

What's one book on your spring TBR list?

1 Yes, I am a total newbie to this series. The first book was fun, so I can't wait to see where this one goes...
2 After reading reviews like the ones on The Book Swarm and I Swim For Oceans, I figured Partials was worth buying. Sounds like such an amazing story!
