DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTERS 18-23
hosted by Supernatural Snark

1.  Gabi and Lia both face several life and death situations in these chapters, having to pick up weapons in defense of those they love and experiencing firsthand the brutality of close combat. If you had the choice between picking up a weapon and standing on the front lines or staying behind to tend to the wounded as necessary, which would you choose?

Give me a weapon, because I’m game. But seriously, if it comes down to people I love, I don't care if morally I have a problem with it - I'm protecting them. I would never want to look back and regret not actively protecting people I care about. I'd rather give it my all, and hope for the best. It wouldn’t be easy, but it would be worth it to defend the people I love....wow, that got personal really quickly ;)

2.  Both girls get to wear extraordinary gowns to their victory celebration; what would your dream medieval gown look like?

I’d love a gown like Lia’s, it sounded gorgeous! Especially if it’s a pretty shade of blue. I'm a sucker for blue :)

3.  Gabi has crude stitches put in and must endure both their removal as well as the cauterization of the wound. How is your threshold for pain? Do you think you would have simply gritted your teeth as Gabi does?

Pain threshold = not that great. I would be hurting pretty badly if I were in Gabi’s place. And probably also freaking out. Crude stitches? Yikes.

4.  Marcello wants to properly court Gabi after they express mutual feelings of affection, wanting to speak with her mother about his intentions. What do you think is the most romantic aspect of medieval courtship?

Didn't they used to write poetry in medieval times when courting? I haven't seen in the story yet, but I  believe they did. Anyway, I think that's utterly romantic. Nothing says "romantic" like the time and effort it takes to write a poem that expresses your feelings for another. Even just a plain old love letter would be romantic.

5.  Gabi and Lia find themselves with conflicting desires toward the end with Lia wanting to return home and Gabi hoping to stay. Do you think that Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay, or is Lia being unfair to Gabi for demanding they go? A little of both?

I think Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay. It’s only been a week, and she’s already considering staying just because she has some intense crush that might be love (I’m a huge romantic, don't get me wrong, but I’m also a realist. Love takes time). Gabi and Lia are not from the time they're stuck in. Lia just wants to go home, to her life, to her correct era, and Gabi should respect that.

  1. You are much braver than I am. I'd want to stay back and help the wounded. I also can't imagine having the stitches out the way Gabi had hers removed. It sounded horrific!

  2. I like your answer to #5. And I'm with you on #1, I'd want to be out there hunting down that Paratore guy to get rid of him once and for all!

  3. I'm with you on the stitches. I would totally pass out form the pain.

As for the poetry, as long as it was good and not a Dr. Seuss rhyme, I'd be swooning along with you.

  4. Go Lea! I'd be right there with you picking up a sword even though I have no idea how to use one:) And I agree, the time put into a love poem/letter is super romantic, not too many people take the time to do things like that today!

  5. I forgot about all the romantic poetry being done back then....

I wonder what happened to all those old traditions....

Maybe Brittney Spears ruined it all.....

    lol...

  6. good answer for #1! i agree. i'd rather die protecting myself or someone i love than just give up or do nothing!

  7. Great answers! I totally agree with your thoughts for question #1 - me too!

And having a guy write poetry about me would be totally cool/sweet. Though I can't write poetry to save my life...it'd be really cool to listen to a guy speak of his love in a poem. ;-) Yep, sooo romantic!

  8. Ooo...a poem. Awesome. My husband writes songs, but can't seem to write a love song for me. I am going to assume his love is too intense for words.

  9. Yes, the very thought of a guy writing you a poem is utterly romantic.

And I have to say, blue looks good on you... or rather, on your blog! Actually, that dress in your header would have perfect for a Medieval ball. :)

  10. I could never imagine hurting anyone but i agree with you. If it came down to the people I love I would try my best to help them or defend them in anyway no matter what. It might turn out to be a good ending but at least I would know that I tried my best.
    Great answers.

  12. What a beautiful and honourable answer for question 1. It really showcases your character. And I agree with all your other answers. Poetry is such a thoughtful way to express yourself.

  13. Ugh, even the thought of crude stitches freaks me out! But a blue gown wouldn't be too bad. :)

  14. I love the idea of a guy writing poetry! And the more I think about it, I could not agree more with what you said for #5!

  15. I'd so be on the front lines...and yes to the blue dress! I seriously need to read this series :)

  16. Lea, I too am a sucker for blue. Lia's dress sounds beautiful. And, I'm right there with you, if it meant protecting the ones I love, I'd be at the front lines. I kind of suck at taking care of people...my empathy levels suck.

  17. I think someone would pretty much have to knock me out in order to deal with what Gabi did...ugh. I'm glad for modern medicine! And in regard to the poetry...the French really brought "Courtly Love" to its apex, but alas, it was later...

  18. I think when you've been through everything Marcello and Gabi have, though they might not be in love, they are headed that way. Remember Gabi has never met a guy in present time that made her feel the way Marcello does. Putting myself in her position, I would not want to leave that feeling either. But I do understand Lia's side of things.

You answered question one in such a great way! I liked your answer.

  19. I would totally want some nasty looking lethal weapon! And then some sweet poetry to balance things out.
