Emma and her friend Chloe are spending vacation in Florida. When Emma (literally) runs into a hot guy named Galen on the beach, little does she know he’s a prince of the Syrena. Galen and Emma both feel something strange – is it attraction? – and Galen suspects that Emma might well be the girl he’s heard of – a human who can communicate with fish.

What follows is a deadly scene with a shark in which Galen witnesses Emma’s gifts. He must know more about her, and follows her back to New Jersey, and high school, to find out for sure if she’s the key to saving his kingdom. Soon, Emma can’t deny her feelings for him, but can’t explain them, either – and both she and Galen must learn more about where she comes from and what her powers are before they can trust one another and their feelings.

I'm a sucker for mermaid / siren / mythical ocean creatures stories. It's a weakness. But, it sounds like there's some instalove (hopefully, there's not). Regardless, I'll definitely be checking this out.

Ed, the last guy she wants to see at the moment, says he knows where to find him. He takes Lucy on an all-night search to places where Shadow’s thoughts about heartbreak and escape echo around the city walls.

But the one thing Lucy can’t see is the one thing that’s right before her eyes.

Mini-Thoughts: In one night, everything can change. It begins innocently enough, with Lucy and friends searching for Lucy's favorite street artist, and Ed's stuck as an unwilling guide. Both Ed and Lucy have their own distinct voices, personalities, and hobbies¹. I found Lucy's odd, melodious voice to be slightly more fascinating than Ed's, but they both were intriguing and unique narrators. The story itself is interesting - filled with adventure and fresh outlooks on life. Graffiti Moon is simply a story that everyone should read.

Highlights: Graffiti Moon is filled with beautiful, breathtaking prose. There's a sense of realism and authenticity that makes it easy to relate with the characters and enjoy the story. Everything is described using vivid words. Poet's few pieces of poetry mixed in with the narrative was wonderful - each piece was lyrical, memorable.

Lowlights: Mostly predictable, like many realistic fiction novels. I wish Poet's limited and brief interruptions in the POV had happened more often.

And unfortunately, once she moves back to Gossamer Falls with her family, the local demons start showing an above average interest in killing her. Luckily, Aurora has an upbeat, mysterious woman and a secretive group of guys known as the Hex Boys to look out for her and the Lahey's. But, the closer Aurora becomes to Hex Boys, the more secrets she unveils – and Aurora might be closer to danger than she anticipated.
It was so easy to love this story. Aurora's humorous yet genuine personality jumps off the pages. She's smart, caring, and relatable. The plot itself never ceases to keep building suspense and excitement. At each concluding chapter, I found myself unable to stop reading and instead compelled to continue on. A & E Kirk's debut novel went above and beyond my expectations. Demons at Deadnight will captivate you with its humorous quality, nonstop action, and authentic characters. This story is a must-read.
Highlights: Great characters, and plenty of fun banter¹. Aurora's family actually acts like a family (caring & embarrassing). The Hex Boys have more than just good looks - they have layered personalities. Any scene involving Aurora and the Hex Boys was usually hilariously awesome. I even enjoyed the budding romance, which is high on attraction and annoyance. Despite some lingering questions, I felt satisfied with what was learned in this novel.
Lowlights: A cliffhanger ending, but it's not too bad. Some clichés². A few times, the pacing became a bit too fast, and I had to backtrack.
Rating:
1. Seriously, it's so fun. I was constantly grinning. ~> 2. But, there's some joking about it. Team Blake, anyone? ;) ~>

Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.
As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Both boys introduce Zoe to feelings that are entirely new. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse.

Sounds interesting! I like the colors in the cover, & the title font rocks.

So normally, I wouldn't choose a fan arranged song/cover, but come on. I may barely remember anything about The Hanging Tree in Mockingjay (page 123), but this rendition is so eerie and amazing.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.
Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

From the beginning, Stiefvater draws you in with the calm and impressive voice of Sean Kendrick. He's won the Scorpio Races four times, and as far as the people of Thisby are concerned, he's a sure winner this year. But when our second narrator – the fiery and determined Kate "Puck" Connolly – enters the races as a last chance to save her unraveling life, the always uncertain races become even more chaotic than usual.
The capaill uisce are not anything like horses you've seen before, and neither is Stiefvater's latest novel. Water horses from the sea, the capaill uisce are bloodthirsty and willing to attack anyone who comes close enough. Stiefvater brings these deadly water horses to life (as well as Puck's normal and oh so lovely horse, Dove), along with the island of Thisby, the characters of Puck and Sean, and even the side characters. The Scorpio Races may move slowly, but every moment is magic.
Highlights: Everything is so alive in The Scorpio Races - the island, the characters, the races, the writing. After adjusting to the pacing, I became utterly enraptured by it all. The characters are layered, and the romance is slow and sincere. The fear, action, and excitement are almost tangible, it's so well written.
Lowlights: Very slow pacing to begin with. I adjusted to it by 97 pages in, and promptly became absorbed in the story.
Note: Don't expect the actual races to take place until the very end (I thought they were going to be earlier, so naturally, I was surprised).
Rating:

1 (Pg. 1) I just like this quote. Kind of sums up the overall feeling of the book nicely, too.

While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

I love the fact that the cover is a drawing (artwork + literature is always a win), but I'm iffy regarding the title's font and color. Perhaps they'll make it look all fancy and use gold foil or something interesting like that when they print it...I like how it looks like an old storybook that holds an amazing tale. It's unique from other books on the shelves. I'm definitely excited for this one :)

Top Ten Books I'm Excited To Read in 2012

1. Insurgent by Veronica Roth - Is it May yet??? *glares at calendar*
2. Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore - I am so crazy excited for this book. I can't wait until a more detailed summary comes out. But, until then, I'll settle for the cool cover with those awesome keys.

3. Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver - No explanation necessary when it comes to a Lauren Oliver book.
4. Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins - The ending to Demonglass still has me extremely curious to know what happens next for Sophie. Plus, this series is always fun to read. Awesome humor, great mystery.

5. Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh - Edgar Allan Poe, mystery, intrigue...I'm hoping it's as good as the last book!
6. The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour - The buzz has been insanely positive for this novel. Plus, it's supposed to be a great book for music fans :)

7. Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard - I've been ~~stalking~~ following Susan's blog for quite a long time, so I'm very excited for her debut! It sounds like it's going to be an exciting read.

8. Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake - The first book rocked, so I'm curious to see if the sequel will be just as great. And how awesome is that cover?
9. Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler - Take Sarah Ockler's writing + hockey boys + romance + plenty of cupcakes. Sounds like a winning combination to me.
10. The Selection by Kiera Cass - Yes, I picked this one mostly because the cover is so eye-catching. The plot is intriguing too...

Intriguing! I really like the cover too, especially with the cool, watery font and the Roman numerals surrounding it.

Top Ten Books I Hope Santa Brings

1. The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson - It's written by Maureen freaking Johnson. I can't believe I've managed to keep from getting this one so for so long.
2. Blackbringer & Silksinger (Dreamdark #1 & #2) by Laini Taylor - I've been loving Taylor's other works, but I've had trouble finding a reasonably priced copy of the latter Dreamdark book (and I'm hesitant to buy the first one without the sequel). Maybe Santa will have better luck.
3. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - The hype has been insane for this story. I need this book.
4. (preorder of) Hana by Lauren Oliver - A Delirium short story!

5. (preorder of) Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler - I love Sarah's books, and I'm sure this one won't be any exception. If only Santa could bring this one early ;)
6. Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore - Witches. Hot cowboy neighbors. That is all.
7. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins - I really don't know why I haven't read this yet. Maybe once I actually have a copy I'll start reading it.
8. Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler - I honestly haven't got a clue why I don't own a finished copy of this one (I own two of Twenty Boy Summer, so I guess that makes up for it), but obviously, I need one.

9. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead - Anyone who's read this blog for a couple years will know I'm a huge Richelle Mead/VA fan, which makes it really weird that I still haven't read or bought Bloodlines.
10. Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork - I've heard nothing but wonderful things about this book, so it would be a great one to receive for the holidays!

Mini-Thoughts: It begins with the Zap, and then all hell breaks loose. Everyone has either died from the EMP, miraculously survived, or have changed into flesh eating zombies. Alex's life dramatically alters from coping with an illness, to being thrust into a survive at any cost situation. There's a blanket of steady uneasiness draped over the story as Alex's journey continues, and it only continues to tighten its grip. Bick builds the suspense, keeping you hooked and terrified for Alex. Ashes is simply thrilling, terrifying, and filled with jaw-dropping twists.
Highlights: Ghost and Mina¹. Bick excels with building curiosity about just what is happening in this story, I was constantly intrigued. The revelations in the latter half were fascinating. The ending was shocking, I didn't see it coming.
Lowlights: The first and second half felt disjointed, both had their pros and cons. The first half was lacking emotional connections with Alex that I found to be present in the second half. The second half lacked excitement or any action (until the end) that was present in the first. The ending² was also a lowlight.

Honestly, I originally read two chapters, said "meh" and then set the novel aside for the next three months. Obviously, I picked it back up again, and I'm really glad that I did.
The Girl of Fire and Thorns begins somewhat inauspiciously, where Carson introduces a heroine that complains too much and inspires too little confidence in her readers. Once 140+ pages pass and an important event takes place, the story comes to life. Elisa's wavering confidence grows. Her somewhat dull personality begins to take on more interesting facets, and she begins to accept herself and her purpose - making it easy to enjoy her character.
I want to say so much more, but this is one of those stories you need to read for yourself so all the surprises aren't spoiled. The Girl of Fire and Thorns is rife with religion, political agendas, secrets, a dash of romance, and plenty of heart-pounding moments as Elisa tries to evade her enemies and draws closer to an impending war. Once you get into this story, there's no setting it aside.
Highlights: It was easy to lose myself in the pages and tumble into the rich and vibrant world Carson created (that is, once the story really got going). Certain characters I did not originally care for became favorites by the end - like Cosmé, or even Elisa¹. I loved the whole Malficio group, and Lord Hector. Carson wraps up Elisa's story almost completely and ends on a strong note².
Lowlights: Some predictability. Elisa at the beginning was difficult to like, to the point where I did set the novel aside. The first 100ish pages were, for the most part, a bit flat and hardly kept my attention. Rating:
1 I was actually surprised how many characters grew on me by the ending - that's rare. 2 Yay, for an actual resolution + only the slightest tease of the forthcoming sequel.

You say "secrets" or even allude to a mystery, and I'm completely on board. The cover is a bit odd though (it reminds me of The Host). I'm not really feeling this cover too much, except for the cool eye color & reflection.
And my next pick is...

I couldn't find any info on a release date or a summary (the cover was revealed on Anna's Tumblr), but I am EXCITED, and I'm loving this dark, muted cover - it makes me curious about the story. I loved Jarzab's debut novel, so I'm hopeful this one will be just as great :)

My Top Ten Childhood Favorites
1. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine - Prince Char! *swoons* The movie did not do this book any justice whatsoever. This book is absolutely amazing, and still a fun story to curl up with and read.
2. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein - Wasn't this book the best? I mean, seriously. How could you not love that tree? Such a cute story.
3. Charlotte's Web by E.B. White - I've never been a fan of spiders, but I've always made an exception for Charlotte ;)
4. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell - I loved this book so much as a kid, mostly because I was very fascinated by other cultures and I secretly really, really wanted a wolf as a pet. Despite the fact that they are, you know, dangerous. I kind of still want a wolf. Darn this book!
5. Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene - I think Nancy Drew was the beginning of my love for mysteries.
6. The Giver by Lois Lowery - This book is still a favorite of mine - very great story that's worth a read.
7. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - It's Ender's Game. No explanation necessary.
8. Holes by Louis Sachar - Still adore this one. Such a different plot, and it has wonderful characters. Love Zero & Stanley!
9. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle - I feel so bad for not remembering what this one is about, because I read this book about a million or so times when I was young. It was my favorite book for years....it has time travel, right? *hangs head in shame* *puts on TBR list*
10. The Littlest Mermaid by Wendy Cheyette Lewison - Cartoon drawings + mermaids + jewel stickers + oceans + fun = awesomeness.

Mini-Thoughts: For a story that hints so heavily at something supernatural, A Beautiful Dark spends more time meandering along as a contemporary until the reveal finally takes place later in the story. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing - time is allowed to dive into Skye's character, giving readers a chance to know her and her life. Relationships between her and two mysterious boys, Devin and Asher, have time to form and grow. Despite any issues I had with the overall story, A Beautiful Dark is an undeniably addictive and overall enjoyable book to read.
Highlights: Skye is a very good narrator, and incredibly easy to connect with. She's a realistic character with friends, an actual life, and hobbies. I really enjoyed the mythology of the story as well, it was very fascinating.
Lowlights: The revelations could have came earlier, and I really disliked the cliffhanger¹. Asher and Devin were, essentially, stalking Skye - and that's not attractive. Skye herself seemed a little wishy-washy at times, she changed her mind about certain things quite a bit. The plot was fairly predictable and clichéd, with only a few genuinely surprising moments.Rating:
1 The story cuts off in the middle of the climax of the plot. The ending to this novel needed a resolution - and there was absolutely none. I was honestly shocked that it ended where it did.

Top Ten Books On My TBR List For Winter
1. Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood - I think I might have died when I got this one in the mail. The gorgeous cover! And it's about witches! It can't go wrong.
2. Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne - Odd occurrences, red stained hands, mysteries...I'm totally in.
3. The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater - I really want to see what all the fuss is about, because it seems like everyone is raving about this book. Deadly water horses? Beautiful prose? It just sounds amazing.
4. The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey - Aylee's review convinced me to buy it, and the Printz Honor award on the cover was pretty convincing too, so it's sitting impatiently on my shelf until I get to it.
5. Article 5 by Kristen Simmons - I have very high hopes for this one, so I hope it manages to be unique in a sea of dystopians.
6. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - I have read and reviewed this trilogy already, but with the upcoming movie, I feel like I need a refresher before spring.
7. Harry Potter series by JK Rowling - Yet another reread I want to do, especially with a series I already adore. Magic, surprises, great world building and fantastic characters...you can't go wrong with a JK Rowling book.
8. Forgotten by Cat Patrick - I love the sound of the plot, very Memento-like. I can't wait to see what happens.
9. Graceling by Kristin Cashore - I only vaguely remember this book, so I think it's time it got bumped up in my TBR pile (especially since Cashore's newest book will be out in the summer).
10. Brightest Kind of Darkness by PT Michelle - After reading Melissa's review, this book got pushed up much higher on my TBR list. Any story with a great protagonist automatically gets me interested.

A broken girl with a ~~curse~~ gift, surrounded by four walls, Juliette finally gains a roommate after 264 days of isolation. Her routine cell life quickly unravels into chaos, especially once she learns that some want to use her as a weapon. As the story progresses, Juliette must grapple with her fears, her abilities, and finally choose her own future.

Oh, my, gosh. I'm a fan of achingly beautiful and metaphorical writing, and Tahereh Mafi sure knows how to deliver. In her debut novel, Shatter Me, the words flow from one to the next. They start building up suspense and then tearing it down again. The action comes and goes, leading into one twist after another, constantly surprising the reader. While I at first thought this novel was mostly dystopian with a dash of paranormal, it becomes clear by the end that the paranormal aspects root deep into the story. There may be some predictability, but Shatter Me is one difficult book to close and set aside.

Highlights: The words wrap themselves around you from the first line and never let go. Each line evokes the senses, giving a fresh, exhilarating outlook on simple things like the crisp, cool air, or stolen kisses¹. I was hooked from the beginning, curious and excited to see what came next for Juliette. But certain characters - Warner, Kenji, and James - make this book shine with their well-rounded and vibrant personalities.

Lowlights: The strikethroughs, while cool, do not make logical sense when you factor in the writing style and tense Mafi uses. Same with a few of the metaphors. There are some overly convenient parts of the story. The world building needs a lot of work, and I hope Mafi will tackle that in the sequel. And while I adored Adam, he needs a bit more development - as does his relationship with Juliette.

Note: A few (very) steamy kisses² that can make a girl blush, and some violence. Perfectly fine for the intended age range of readers (14+)

Top Ten Authors I'd Love to Have at my Thanksgiving Feast

1. JK Rowling - Not saying I'd be coherent enough to actually speak to her, but she would definitely be the first author I'd invite.
2. Laini Taylor - She has awesome pink hair, therefore, she is invited.
3. Lauren Oliver - She's a favorite author of mine, so naturally, I'd love to have her as a Thanksgiving guest. Plus, maybe I could manage to get some insider info on Pandemonium ;)
4. Meg Cabot - I'd mostly want Meg over just to say how I'm thankful for the books she's written. Even in the worst moments of my life, where everything was just terrible, Meg's books were a comfort zone that I'm eternally thankful for.
5. Sarah Dessen - Same reasoning as above. I am a long-time Dessen fan :)
6. Maggie Stiefvater - She's Maggie freaking Stiefvater. That's reason enough for wanting her over.

7. Daisy Whitney - Loved her debut, and Daisy always seems so cheerful. Who wouldn't want someone like her at their Thanksgiving feast? The mood in the room would brighten immediately.
8. Jay Asher - Poor Jay, he's the only guy I picked! Anyway, he's an awesome writer and he always seems so amusing on Facebook & his blog, so he would definitely have a place at my (very small) table.
9. Maureen Johnson - She's kinda crazy, especially on Twitter, and therefore would make an amusing addition to the guest list. Maureen is practically all the entertainment you'd need during Thanksgiving dinner.
10. Nancy Holder - Nancy is just so nice online! How could I not invite her? It'd be great to actually meet her in person.

Undeniably enthralling, Daughter of Smoke and Bone is the standout story of the year. And how could it not be, with blue-haired, artsy Karou and the mystery of her past at the heart of the story? With a beaded necklace capable of granting wishes and more talents than she can reasonably account for, Karou fascinated me as a lead character right from the first page. Whether it's the enchanting (and real) characters in she draws in her sketchbook or Karou's amusing antics against her scumbag ex-boyfriend, every aspect of Karou's unusual life will make you even more curious to continue reading.

But it's not until Akiva - smoldering and intense Akiva - appears that Karou's world gets a little more interesting...and complicated. Laini Taylor takes readers through a journey of love, heartbreak, secrets, and revelations in Daughter of Smoke and Bone. The settings for the story don't disappoint either, whether it's Brimstone's shop¹, Poison Kitchen in Prague, or the lively streets of Marrakesh, every word makes this story easily visualized. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a story completely worthy of being on your wishlist - or better yet, on your "favorites" bookshelf.

Highlights: Utterly unique and completely captivating, Laini Taylor's words keep you glued to the pages. Taylor managed to make her characters 3-dimensional, from Karou, Zuzanna, Brimstone and all the others. But it's the story overall that I loved the most - I was over angels and demons, but Taylor's unique outlook and twist on everything managed to interest me. Even the romance made sense, and I love how it started out.
Lowlights: The latter half was interesting, but felt slightly disjointed from the beginning of the book. The cut-off ending² about killed me, yet I've read worse cliffhangers. Honestly though, I was surprised that it ended where it did. Rating:

1 Coolest shop ever. Seriously. Even if it's a little twisted and creepy (what with all the teeth and Karou's very unusual adopted family). 2 Putting in a "To be continued" or cliffhanger seems to be a common theme among series lately, much to my dislike. But I'll give Taylor a pass this time, because otherwise, this story kept me hooked.

Utilizing a dual narrative in Legend, Lu gives readers two opposing extremes of the Republic through the perspectives of Day and June. Day's kindhearted nature and affinity for very dramatic escapes help make him an exciting character. He's no fool, and it's amusing to see how he keeps June on her toes. June's superior attitude is slightly off-putting in the beginning, but more likable aspects of her personality begin to slowly appear as the novel progresses, and I quickly found myself rooting for her as well. The closer Day and June came to finding answers, the harder I found it to set this story aside. Legend can be summed up into three words: thrilling, captivating, and spectacular.
Highlights: Conspiracies, fight scenes, action, (likely improbable but still awesome) escapes, fast-paced writing, and plenty of twists and surprises to make up for the ones I discovered early on. The setting itself is intriguing, whether it's the slums or the richer districts. Characters came to life with every turn of the page, and a good deal of the relationships that were formed seemed authentic. I loved how much Day cared for his family, it made him even more endearing to me.
Lowlights: June and Day can, at times, almost seem like the exact same person¹ when reading. Also, just a couple moments required a bit of suspension-of-disbelief in order for me to move past it. Rating:

1 If it weren't for the very obvious differences in font/font color, I would've gotten confused during a couple points. There are some personality differences, but also a good deal of similarities too. However, this can be somewhat explained by something important that they have in common.

When Cas gets a tip about a ghost locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas and his mother - plus her slightly evil yet useful cat, Tybalt - move to Thunder Bay. With a fresh voice and an extremely amusing personality, Cas makes this book shine. In addition to Anna - eerie, terrifying, and complex Anna - the two of them have a magnetic pull that kept me coming back for more.

I honestly was not expecting Anna Dressed in Blood to live up to the hype, but I knew I was wrong to have doubts after reading the first chapter. Cas is a complex narrator, and the budding relationships in the story drew me in. Fear, mystery, and great characters successfully drive this story. The plot moves from focusing on Anna to an even more intriguing and downright shocking mystery. You won't be able to guess where this story will take you next, despite a few hints. With eerie scenes, authentic characters, tantalizing mysteries and more, Anna Dressed in Blood takes your typical ghost story to the next level.

Highlights: Blake holds back nothing with her writing - she unabashedly writes gory scenes that will stay in your mind for weeks, presses the eerie feel of the story enough to give you the chills, and slips in quite a few surprises along the way².
Lowlights: I would have liked a bit more development with the supporting cast of characters, but I imagine that will happen more in the next novel.
Notes: There's murder, cursing, witchcraft, gore, blood, creepiness, and whatnot. Rating:
1 Who are we kidding, it's totally ghostbusting. But cooler. 2 Seriously, just go read this book. Give it a chance, because it's awesome.

1. After Gabi is injured, the doctor gives her a tonic. Gabi questions the doctor several times what is in it but he refuses to tell. Would have you taken the tonic in Gabi situation?
Hell no. No freaking way. I’d wait it out, travel forward through time, and then go see my doctor, because my doctor rocks.
2. Before the games Gabi asks Lia to let Lord Forabosch win in the archery event as people especially Lord Forabosch are becoming suspicious of them. But during the games Lord Forabosch upsets Lia trying to throw her off her game. So Lia decides to win. Do you think she did the right thing by not letting Lord Forabosch bully her or do you think she took an unnecessary risk?
It might have been better if she threw the game, but I can’t blame Lia for showing what she’s capable of. She’s a teen, of course she’s going to give it her all after some gloating jerk taunts her.
3. When Gabi is dying and she and Lia decide to return to the tombs so they can get the cure at home but they have to tell Marcello the truth. Even though Marcello thinks that it is madness that they are from the future he believes in Gabi because he loves her. Do you think this is believable? What would you have done if you were Marcello?
I honestly would probably think the person was crazy if I were Marcello. But hey, if they are dying, I care about them, and they want to go to some tomb in order to time travel, what’ve you got to lose? I’d say it’s definitely believable that Marcello just goes with it, thinking from that perspective.
4. In the end Gabi and Lia return home. Do you think Gabi will return to Marcello? Would you go back?
Considering that there are two more books, I’d say it is a given that Gabi travels back in time again. She's too into Marcello not to come back. I don’t know if I’d travel back, (especially after getting stabbed) but if some romantic, chivalrous guy was waiting for me…who knows? ;)
5. Looking back at Waterfall what was your favorite moment?
Any scene with Luca was a favorite of mine (Fortino was pretty amusing at times too)...and the action scenes were pretty great! :)

Torn between fear and love.

What was the most difficult partfor you when writing Eve?

I loved writing the first sectionof the book, when Eve leaves School and is out in the wild for the first time.The hardest part was writing the section that came right after. Eve is slowlyletting go of everything she’s been taught, and struggling with her newfeelings for Caleb. There’s a lot of confusion and fear and curiosity there. Itwas tricky to convey all that and still keep the plot moving.

Which supporting/secondarycharacter was your favorite to write?

I love Arden. She’s a reallystrong woman. There’s also so much sadness in her. She doesn’t let people in.She’s terrified of being vulnerable to anyone else—the one thing she needsmost. Despite all that, she’s the bravest character in the book.

Any favorite teaser quotes from Eve that youcan share?

From the first time Eve is alone with Caleb:

“He was a strange breed of man, part wild. Not thesophisticated kind who graced the pages of TheGreat Gatsby. Nor did he seem like the violent men I’d encountered my firstday in the wild. He’d saved me, at least. I could only hope it wasn’t for somenefarious purpose.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTERS 18-23 hosted by Supernatural Snark
1. Gabi and Lia both face several life and death situations in these chapters, having to pick up weapons in defense of those they love and experiencing firsthand the brutality of close combat. If you had the choice between picking up a weapon and standing on the front lines or staying behind to tend to the wounded as necessary, which would you choose?
Give me a weapon, because I’m game. But seriously, if it comes down to people I love, I don't care if morally I have a problem with it - I'm protecting them. I would never want to look back and regret not actively protecting people I care about. I'd rather give it my all, and hope for the best. It wouldn’t be easy, but it would be worth it to defend the people I love....wow, that got personal really quickly ;)
2. Both girls get to wear extraordinary gowns to their victory celebration; what would your dream medieval gown look like?
I’d love a gown like Lia’s, it sounded gorgeous! Especially if it’s a pretty shade of blue. I'm a sucker for blue :)
3. Gabi has crude stitches put in and must endure both their removal as well as the cauterization of the wound. How is your threshold for pain? Do you think you would have simply gritted your teeth as Gabi does?
Pain threshold = not that great. I would be hurting pretty badly if I were in Gabi’s place. And probably also freaking out. Crude stitches? Yikes.
4. Marcello wants to properly court Gabi after they express mutual feelings of affection, wanting to speak with her mother about his intentions. What do you think is the most romantic aspect of medieval courtship?
Didn't they used to write poetry in medieval times when courting? I haven't seen in the story yet, but I believe they did. Anyway, I think that's utterly romantic. Nothing says "romantic" like the time and effort it takes to write a poem that expresses your feelings for another. Even just a plain old love letter would be romantic.
5. Gabi and Lia find themselves with conflicting desires toward the end with Lia wanting to return home and Gabi hoping to stay. Do you think that Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay, or is Lia being unfair to Gabi for demanding they go? A little of both?
I think Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay. It’s only been a week, and she’s already considering staying just because she has some intense crush that might be love (I’m a huge romantic, don't get me wrong, but I’m also a realist. Love takes time). Gabi and Lia are not from the time they're stuck in. Lia just wants to go home, to her life, to her correct era, and Gabi should respect that.

Top Ten Books I Feel As Though Everyone Has Read But Me
1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - I can already see some of you giving me that look because I've never read this one. I own it, but I haven't quite gotten past 20 pages in...
2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky - I meant to get this one so many times, but it was never in at my library whenever I looked. I always feel so weird for not having read it when so many other people have.
3. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan - It looks like such fun, and it's got mythology (I love mythology), but I still haven't ever picked up a copy.
4. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles - It's pretty much a given that someone will recommend this to me at least once a month. Honestly, it sounds utterly cliché to me, but I guess it's still pretty popular?
5. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead - Okay, so maybe everyone hasn't read this yet, but it sure feels like it. I keep seeing so many mixed reviews, they're making me nervous to buy a copy of the book!
6. The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger - The year I would have read this back in high school was also the year I took an Honors version of English, so I ended up reading other books for that class. *hides under rock*
7. Clockwork Angel / CoG / CoFA by Cassandra Clare - Okay, this is more than one book, but let's just pretend that they're all only one. Usually, I'm pretty good with sequels and series. But for some reason, I haven't finished the Mortal instruments books, let alone gotten past pg. 50 in Clare's newest series....Maybe I just need to do a full reread of every book, and then I'll be inspired to finally catch up?
8. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - I vaguely remember trying to read this one, but then I just watched the Keira Knightly movie instead ;)
9. Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly - Raving reviews are everywhere for this book. Everywhere. Why haven't I read this one???
10. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - This book isn't even released yet and I already feel like everyone else has read it. And loved it. And loved some dude named Noah. So much so, I keep reading fangirly raves about him. Apparently, this book (and Noah) cannot be missed....

Thoughts: I've been thinking about this novel for a few months now, reflecting on the story and my reaction to it¹...and in the end, I realized that Where She Went must have been pretty spectacular to remain in my thoughts for so long.
After three long years, Adam and his band are on top of the world and he's a famous rock star. But despite how great everything seems, Adam's less than thrilled with his life. Even his relationships with his band-mates aren't what they used to be. Everyday, he runs through the motions of his rock-star life while staving off nervous breakdowns with a bottle of pills. Honestly, it was so heartbreaking to read Adam narrative and to see his character so sad. Even with Mia's appearance, the changes in her both pleased and saddened me as I followed Adam's narration.

Forman's writing evoked different emotions in me with words that were poetic, beautiful, and heartbreaking. It is so easy to get lost in the story and emotion of Where She Went, and to just let the pages turn as the story unfolds. The story itself takes place quickly, for the most part in a matter of a full day, as Adam and Mia spend time trying to understand each other, themselves, the past, and coming to terms with each of their futures.
Highlights: Adam's voice is achingly familiar, yet fresh and compelling - I was worried he would sound like Mia. However, Adam is different, broken² in a different way than Mia once was. And thankfully, he still has some of his lovable charm and humor. I love how Forman shows how her characters have changed in three years, how they've evolved and grown. Even though it was initially a challenge for me to dive into Adam's mindset, Adam's words and the emotion behind them resonated with me long after the final page.
Lowlights: The first half of the novel was difficult to get through because Adam really is in such a down place, and not entirely the man he used to be. It's difficult to see a character you adore be in a place like that. But, the last half made everything worthwhile. Rating:

Sexy, mysterious, exciting and filled with surprises - Shift has it all. The story begins with Aura being a bit (okay, extremely) bummed out regarding what happened to Logan previously. It isn't until a few chapters later where the Aura that I adore comes back - her sarcastic humor never ceased to amuse me. But, there are still of troubles, whether it's with boys or even with the DMP. Smith-Ready excels at creating genuine and honest chemistry (both friendship-wise and romantic) between characters, but only one of the lovely guys who adores Aura truly fits with her the best, and I loved seeing this relationship grow.

In between typical (and not so typical) teenage drama lies a mystery that will captivate readers entirely. The significance of Aura and Zachary's births, Aura's mother, The Shift, Stonehenge, one downright shocking secret, and so much more....the closer Aura came to discovering everything, the more hooked on the story I became.

Shade delivered compelling and realistic characters, Shift came through with plenty of seductive secrets, and I have no doubt that Jeri Smith-Ready is going to give readers something spectacular with the next novel, Shine.

Highlights: Many of the characters grew in this installment. And Smith-Ready made a kilt sexy...which I didn't think was possible. Smith-Ready ends the story nicely, but leaves quite a few tantalizing hooks to keep readers curious for the third novel¹. All in all, these books are must-reads, so go check out the first novel if you haven't already!

Lowlights: Despite the incredible chemistry², the boy drama got to be a bit much every now and then. I wanted to shake some sense into quite a few characters!

1 No joke. I'm dying to know what happens next. I would consider trading my sibling for a copy of Shine, and I'm fairly sure that wouldn't be entirely legal.
2 And yes, there are plenty of super-sexy moments. And a couple might be for more mature teens.

1. Gabi's search for her sister is made increasingly difficult by the fight for territory between Castello Forelli and Castello Paratore. At this point, do you think the rivalry is warranted? Why or why not? I don’t think the rivalry is warranted, and I’m not even going to attempt explaining myself so as not to bore anyone with a long-winded explanation (trust me, it would bore you).
2. Gabi aids Fortino by having his sickroom cleaned out and using steam to loosen the phlegm inside his lungs so he could breathe better. Have you ever found yourself in a situation that required you to rely on home remedies to aid yourself or another? What are some of your favorite home remedies?   I rely more heavily on modern medicine, but I do sort of use home remedies. I’m a firm believer that warm liquid foods/drinks are the absolute best things you can eat/drink when you’re sick. Also, warm, steamy showers always make breathing a little easier (plus they feel good!). Gargling salt water is supposed to be great for sore throats, although it rarely works for me (mostly because I gag on the saltiness and spit it all out, lol).
3. Marcello and his men don't hide their surprise when they learn that Gabi is skilled with a sword. What did you think of this development? Has your initial impression of Gabi changed? Do you have any secret skills?   I love that Gabi can swing a sword and that she’s brave enough to put herself in the middle of a battle. I think I’m liking her character more as the story moves along. As for my secret skills, I don’t think I really have any…maybe I should work on getting some ;)
4. "Our lips were so close, I could feel the heat of his breath on my skin." Gabi and Marcello's feelings for one another are beginning to stir. What do you think of Marcello as a romantic interest thus far? What do you think of his intended?   I actually like Luca more than Marcello, plus he’s single! Marcello’s already taken and that complicates things. Lady Romana Rossi was a bit of a {expletive} at first, but I don’t know. I want to still hate her, but she kind of redeemed herself a little bit during the escape scene. Let’s just see what she does next.
5. Marcello and Luca take turns teaching Gabi the dances of Toscana. Would you have liked to attend a ball like the one Gabi was practicing for? Do you like to dance? Do you know any cool dance moves? Extra (not really) points if you YouTube yourself dancing and share the video. Come on, it will be fun! :)   I think it’d be fun to attend a ball, in a gorgeous gown, as long as I knew how to do the steps!
And as for making a video of myself dancing – HA! You don’t want to see me dance. I like to dance, but I don’t do it very well!

Slow Week...and Links

Hey everyone!
I know things have been slow on the blog lately. My college courses started a couple weeks ago, so I'm a little behind on blogging (analyzing The Canterbury Tales and Beowulf is taking up so much of my time that it's almost ridiculous). However, I should be back on track with blogging, commenting, and emailing fairly soon. In the meantime, this week will have fewer posts than normal.
But in the meantime, I did manage to spot something neat while on Amazon buying textbooks -- Have you seen that the original script of the pilot episode for ABC's upcoming TV series Revenge is available free on Kindle? It even has a link to the full pilot episode at the end of the script to watch, so be sure to check it out!
